Module 8 Durban and the Roof of South Africa
From Durban to Johannesburg - ± 800 km
Durban – KwaZulu Natal Midlands – Drakensberge – Johannesburg
Durban – multi-cultural metropolis next to the Indian Ocean and the largest port in the country. Here the Indian Ocean invites for a refreshing swim, and the Indian kitchen lures with oriental spices. The much quieter KwaZulu-Natal Midlands remind of the European low mountain ranges. Here on the 'Midlands Meander', with well marked circular routes through the area, many farms can be visited for art works as well as other useful inexpensive articles. From handmade shoes to textiles to homemade soaps. Here everybody will find something! Now the alpine world of the Drakensberge is calling, the "Roof of South Africa". Numerous hiking trails with different levels of difficulty are waiting. The mountains can also be explored by mountain bike or by horse. Well worth a visit is the 'Amphitheater', the unique setting of the Mount-Aux-Sources massif. An overnight stay near Johannesburg concludes this unit.
